Hoping for the BeSt ^-^

Finally, we had finished our presentation ^_^ !!

First of all, we would like to thank DIGI for bringing us this serious issue and change us over the period of this competition.

Apart from that, we would like to acknowledge the help of our advisor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nowshad Amin, our Digi Mentors, Mr Siva, Mr. Shah, Mr. Desmond, and other well-wishers who had helped us and supported us during this competition.

As third year students, we have learnt a lot in this competition. And, for your information, most of the knowledge we learnt cannot be found in a text book. For an example, here we would like to share some general knowledge about PV panels in order to correct the wrong perception of people towards Solar PV power plant . As we all know, the efficiency of the solar PV panels are 10 to 14%. I know what you are thinking about and i would like to inform you that you are wrong. For your information, the percentage of the PV panels is the percentage of the PV panels to harvest photons from the sunlight. For PV panel with 10% efficiency, to harvest 110W, you need a bigger size PV panel than the PV panel with 14% efficiency. But, for a 110W PV panel, both panel will still produce 110W. We can confidently tell that the power that it can produce is 110W.

Besides that, we really enjoy being Greenish!! And, we would like to thank DIGI again for letting us to visit Kampung Terian, Sabah where we able to get close with the nature besides get interact with the underserved communities. It is an eye opening experience for all the team members of Greenish in Sabah.

Finally, the result will be annouced at 9th of March 2010 in KL Convention Center,KLCC Malaysia.

Here are our updates about solar energy..Feel free to check it out and leave comments ^_^


1. What's so great about the sun, anyway?
The sun is amazing. Without it, none of us would be here, and there would be no life on earth. It is bigger than anything we can really imagine--a million planet earths would fit inside it! It takes millions of years for the energy from the center of the sun to reach the sun's surface, and then just eight minutes for it to travel the 93 million miles to earth! The sun gives off more energy in one second than people have used since the beginning of time.


2. What does solar energy mean?
Solar energy just means energy (light or heat) that comes from the sun. There are as many different ways to use solar energy as you have ideas in your head. What gets you hot lying on the beach on a summer day? What gets your car hot when it's parked in the sun with the windows closed? What makes your solar calculator go? What makes the giant solar panels on satellites work? What makes the clouds that make the rain? What sets a blade of glass under a magnifying glass on fire? Yup, it is solar energy.

3. Is solar energy new?
No! Solar energy has existed for five billion years, since the sun was born. And humans have been using solar energy for thousands of years. 700 years before the year one, people used simple magnifying glasses to concentrate the light of the sun into beams so hot they caught wood on fire. However, using solar panels to turn the sun's light directly into electricity is new. That technology was only invented only 50 years ago.


4. What if I want my solar panel to make electricity at night, or on cloudy days?
When the sun stops shining on your solar panel, its electrons stop moving and electricity stops flowing. So what do you do if you want to be able to read or watch television at night? What stores the electricity in a flashlight? Right! A battery! And that's exactly what people do with solar panels... they attach batteries. The batteries are big, heavy, rectangular boxes, sort of like car batteries. Electricity from a solar panel flows into attached batteries while the sun shines, and then the stored electricity in the batteries can be used at night, or when the sun is behind the clouds.

5. How do the solar panels work?
A solar panel is made up a number of solar cells. Solar cells are generally made from thin wafers of silicon, the second most abundant substance on earth, the same substance that makes up sand. When photons of sunlight hit a solar panel, some are absorbed into the solar cells, where their energy knocks lose some of the modified silicon's electrons. These loose electrons are forced by electric fields in the PV panel to flow along wires that have been placed within the cells. This flow of electrons through the wires is electricity, and will provide power for whatever load we attached. Because solar cells are modular, a system's size can be increased (or decreased) over time, according to need.

Welcome Mentors^^ !!

The 1st Greenish's Mentors Session in a brand new 2010 year had been held today(Jan 11) ^_^

Our session was held in our JKEES Department's meeting room. And, it was a fruitful 1 hour session for us where we shared our progress with them and asked questions regarding challenge2 and also challenge3.
Besides that, they also gave their useful ideas, opinions and feedbacks to help us to improve our projects more.

We had decided not to compete in an ugly way with the other five teams but to share our knowledge to each and everyone of you in order to educate everyone about SOLAR energy. Thus, starting from today, we will start sharing informations and news regarding solar energy from time to time^^.
